Update 11/01/2020
All roadways were cleared this weekend after Georgia Power confirmed power lines were safe to work around. Some utility work may be continuing and require brief lane or road closures. City staff is cataloging all the damage today and planning how and where to concentrate our cleanup efforts in the right-of-ways and sidewalks. The chipping crews finished their regular chipping routes last week and are starting a new cycle. All of the city’s chippers are out today and will be until cleanup is completed. We will be starting tomorrow with heavy equipment and roll-off trucks to clear the larger debris. The bagged yard debris crews will be overwhelmed so the daily routes may be affected. We will get to all the debris as soon as possible. The city’s public works team will concentrate on the debris removal function, extending the cleanup effort during the upcoming weeks. Patience is appreciated.
The power companies remain overwhelmed with calls for outages and are working to give attention to locations in our area. All of North Georgia suffered unprecedented damage with downed trees, limbs, equipment damage, power poles broken and the ground troops are just trying to keep regional and critical infrastructure power running. Crews spent most of the day yesterday assessing the extent of the damage, working to get the backbone of energy networks operational and concentrating critical customers like hospitals, EMA’ and other life support activities. They now have additional crews on the ground with more on the way, so they should be able to get into individual areas today and see some progress with power restoration.
Our city public works crews are ready to move trees, limbs and debris from the roads once the power company confirms it is safe to do so.
